EE Announces Sunset of 3G Mobile Signals: Transitioning to 5G Connectivity

EE has officially announced plans to sunset its 3G mobile signals, transitioning customers to more advanced 4G and 5G connectivity. This move comes as part of EE’s ongoing efforts to enhance network efficiency, provide better service quality, and align with the rapid evolution of mobile technologies. The announcement was made during a joint presentation by Sam Johnson, Partner Sales Manager, and George Bateman, EE Lead Consultant Specialist. The presentation emphasized the technological advancements that have occurred since the inception of 3G, highlighting the capabilities of the 4G and 5G networks in comparison. Johnson explained that the 3G network, which has been in operation since the days of Orange and T-Mobile, is now considered outdated and increasingly difficult to maintain due to scarcity of components and high operational costs. Bateman noted that the 3G network would be deactivated by the end of December. Pilot programs are already underway to assess the impact on customers, and EE is actively reaching out to users still reliant on 3G to encourage them to transition to 4G and 5G networks. He also emphasized that EE is committed to supporting customers throughout this transition, facilitating the replacement of 3G devices and SIM cards with modern alternatives.

Paul Day, EE’s Partner Sales Manager of Mobility & IoT Development, highlighted the company’s efforts to ensure a smooth migration process for customers. EE offers a range of solutions, including aggregated data plans tailored for various user needs. The company aims to provide greater cost certainty and flexibility for businesses through these new plans, addressing the concerns of unexpected overage charges. Additionally, EE has revamped its roaming offerings, introducing simplified and inclusive daily roaming options, ensuring that customers can use their devices abroad without fear of surprise charges. EE also stressed its commitment to providing seamless connectivity in critical situations, such as emergency services networks, remote coverage, and transportation systems. The presentation underscored the advantages of EE’s extensive network coverage, spectrum licensing, and penetration into buildings. As EE prepares to phase out 3G, the company is determined to offer innovative solutions that cater to the diverse needs of its customers. The focus remains on providing reliable, high-speed, and future-ready mobile connectivity while ensuring a smooth transition for all users still relying on 3G technology. With these changes, EE continues to solidify its position as a leading force in the UK’s mobile telecommunications landscape.
