UC Advanced Issue # 1

Mathieu Lagrange: “I think mobile operators have been investing quite heavily in 5G networks, but in the end, the type of services that are accessible are the same as before. We have more capacity on the public networks, but it’s difficult for the operators to monetize this new capacity. “The big trend that is emerging today is that people are trying to find new ways to monetise the 5G technology itself, and one of the ways they found is to promote use cases in the private industry that can add value for the different companies that will be using this technology on premise.”

emergency communications. One network, but with multiple service and tariffing options.”

Alex Baines: “While the 5G adoption has been somewhat slower than some may have anticipated or predicted, it’s clearly enabling a whole wave of new technology concepts that are now feasible at scale and can be delivered to the masses. An example that comes to mind is a product like Odience, by Summit Tech, which fully harnesses 5G’s capabilities to deliver live content such as live sports and retail shopping events, with 360-degree video feeds, audio and consumer interactions.” Mathieu Lagrange: “I think the most important improvements 5G brings does not lie in the capacity itself, but more in the core network. Businesses can access additional features in the core network such as improved security, and a new way of designing what we call network functions, which sees different components placed inside the core. “This new way of designing those components is very disruptive in terms of businesses ability to manage the lifecycle of their software solution. We’ve come from a situation where network functions are very static, with very specific communication protocols between each other, that makes them quite difficult to deploy because they need to use very static IP addresses. “With 5G, each network functions like an internet website. Businesses communicate through HTTP protocols with the other network functions, so there’s synchronous communication. That makes the deployment very easy, businesses can deploy a component on a server, another on another one, one part of the core network could be in the cloud, the other on premise. That flexibility really is a game changer for the different companies that will be using the technology. “In turn, businesses can manage their network by using tools coming from the cloud community. All the observability, the monitoring of the solution can be made through tools that are widely used by IT teams. It’s really like managing the application and managing the network exactly the same way as managing applications in the enterprise. That’s something that helps to reduce the steps of adopting the technology for the enterprises.”

It also means operators will be able to take advantage of technologies like 5G network slicing.

Is 5G becoming more accessible to businesses? David Stokes: “With many operators switching on 5G standalone (5GSA), or ‘real 5G’, the ambition is that it will help operators capitalise on 5G’s high capacity, low latency and high bandwidth capabilities to enable near real-time data processing. These advanced capabilities are expected to lead to new use cases across industry 4.0 and in verticals like healthcare and education, as well as more immersive experiences through AR and VR applications in environments such as sporting events, gaming, and education. “It also means operators will be able to take advantage of technologies like 5G network slicing. Through network slicing, a 5G network could make a very high capacity, low-latency connection available for a specific period of the day to enable scheduled high quality low-latency video for broadcasting sporting events. “Alternatively, in a smart city, a 5G network could dedicate or allocate a slice of the network for guaranteed high-speed real-time
